THE RIVIERA MAYA
Extending
south of Cancun, from Punta Brava to Punta Allen in the Sian Ka´an
Biosphere Reserve (120 km), the Riviera Maya caters to travelers
seeking tranquility and escape. Buffered by the Great Mayan Reef, the
Riviera occupies a strip of perfect sand, endless lagoons and lowland
tropical forest. Bejeweled by ruins, cenotes and resort towns, it
embraces a different vacation style, ideal for lovers of nature, beach
life, sunning and funning in a very laidback atmosphere.
GETTING
TO PLAYA DEL CARMEN
Playa
is easy to get to. A 30-minute drive from Cancun’s international
airport, this paradise is right down Highway 307. Buses run from the
Cancun Bus Station (Terminal de Autobuses) every 15 minutes (take a van
to the terminal from the airport), and there are taxis, though many
visitors choose to rent a car and explore all the outlying attractions
on their own. There are many: the island of Cozumel with its exemplary
diving, grand ruins in Cobá and Tulum, the beaches at Xpu-Há, Paamul
and Akumal, caves and cenotes for exploring, eco-tours, parachuting, to
name but a few.
PLAYA DEL CARMEN QUINTA AVENIDA The
hotels and restaurants of Playa del Carmen offer the visitor Mexican
cuisine as well as fresh seafood, pasta dishes and other international
delicacies.
The
main avenue, called Quinta Avenida, is dotted with a multitude of
cafeterias, each offering its own ambiance and charm. In the evening and
night, one can sip cocktails in a bar overlooking the sea, dance to the
tropical rhythms of live music or join an improvised party around a
campfire on the beach. On the shops of Quinta Avenida one can find handicrafts from all
over the country.
ARCHEOLOGICAL
SITES
Playa
del Carmen lies very close to the main Mayan archeological sites, which
can be reached easily and quickly. Tulum and Xel-Ha are located 45 minutes
away by road, and in the midst of the jungle, more or less an hour and a
half’s ride into the forest, lies coba, and the journey to reach it is
well worth the effort.
Xcaret, an original eco-archaeological park, is
very near Playa del Carmen and offers many activities, such as exploring
the subterranean rivers, horse-riding on the beach or swimming with
dolphins. At night there is a show with Mayan dances and ceremonies, as
well as spectacular folklore with dances and costumes from all over
Mexico.
